Finse

Hotel Finse 1222

At 1222 meters above sea level, at the highest point of the Bergen Railway, lies Hotel Finse 1222 – a high mountain hotel surrounded by wild and beautiful nature. The easiest way to get here is by train from Voss – just over an hour away – or from Bergen and Oslo. There are no roads leading here, and that is precisely what makes the journey part of the experience. When you step off the platform, the hotel is right in front of you, with the Hardangerjøkulen glacier as a magnificent backdrop.

The hotel is located halfway between Hardangervidda National Park and Hallingskarvet National Park – two of Norway's most impressive natural areas. Hardangervidda is known for its vast high mountain plateau and rich wildlife, especially wild reindeer, while Hallingskarvet stands out with its dramatic mountain massif and alpine landscape.

Since opening in 1909, the hotel has been a meeting place for adventurers, mountaineers, and nature lovers. Today, it has been carefully renovated in collaboration with Snøhetta, preserving its historic soul while giving the rooms and common areas modern comforts and a cozy feel.

Rooms and facilities
The hotel has 45 rooms with a total of 109 beds. Here you will find everything from intimate single rooms to panoramic suites and larger rooms that are well suited for families or groups. All rooms have private bathrooms with showers and toilets. Some rooms have views of Hardangerjøkulen, while others face Finsenut. There are also budget rooms with a simpler standard, but always with private bathrooms.

The hotel has a restaurant serving locally sourced food, a bar and lounge, ski and bike rental, and a 24-hour reception.

Summer at Finse (mid-July–September)
When the snow recedes, an adventurous landscape opens up for cycling, hiking, and glacier experiences. You can cycle along the Rallarvegen trail, explore the Hardangerjøkulen glacier on a guided glacier experience, or go hiking in the national parks that surround Finse. There are both short trips and long day trips, depending on how much time and energy you want to spend.

Winter at Finse (November–May)
Winter at Finse is long and snowy. Here you can glide across the plateau on skis – the hotel's signature activity – go randonee skiing to nearby peaks, explore the terrain on mountain skis or enjoy peaceful snowshoe hikes. The ski center is open on some weekends, and throughout the winter everything from ski courses to Finsejazz is organized.
